Art and Design

At St Minver School, we question the purpose of art through creating opportunities that provide a safe space for the exploration of risk-taking, through a journey-based approach, centred on drawing, sketchbooks and all kinds of making. We aim to enable children to understand the ways art connects us with our past, help us embrace the present, and empower us to shape our future.

We intend to enable children to understand why art is relevant to all our lives and to make certain that they feel empowered to develop their creativity, and consider their place in the world as curious, creative and confident artists.

An holistic curriculum aims to nurture critical thinking, helping them to confidently read an image whilst developing their own visual literacy skills, so that our children learn through art, as well as about art.

We will study artists, designers and craftspeople not with the intention of recreating their style, but so that we can learn from the way they see the world. These studies will aim to stimulate creativity and open out thinking so that it embraces more possibility, giving children opportunities to develop intellectually, emotionally, physically and socially, through the unique subject of art.

Art and design will be planned and sequenced so that our children build skills and knowledge through a combination of opportunities for repeated practice and new projects. Art is subjective and experiential and has many types of “knowledge” embedded with in it, all of which are best understood when delivered through experiential learning.

By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study. Clear end points are identified so that children know how they are able to reach those end points.

Progression in art will be assessed through applying a gentle and useful approach, gathering evidence from the pupils’ sketch books, displays and photographs. We will record a level of attainment in Art and Design on the child’s annual report to parents.
